I installed the program and when I went to run the admin index file, I got the following error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /forum-news/admin/display.php on line 484
Does anyone know what I've done wrong?
Thanks.

You have probably done nothing wrong but somehow got ahold of a bad version from someone.
Follow these steps:
1. Remove the entire forum-news folder and its contents.
2. Download the official script at http://www.ep-dev.com/scripts-5.php
3. Unzip script.
4. Upload script's forum-news folder to your site.
5. Visit yoursite.com/forum-news/admin/index.php in your browser.
If you are still having problems then try the following:
Open up forum-news/admin/display.php and at the very of the the file add a new line containing:
?>

I tried both suggestions you gave, and it is still giving me the same error. Can you think of anything else it might be?

Well, you can always open up the file and see what is on line 484.
As I already said, the script from ep-dev.com just has "}" on line 484.
